ABOUT US

The Legal Clinic of Criminal Justice was established in 2018 within the Department of Law "Cesare Beccaria" (Università degli Studi di Milano).

Since its foundation, the Clinic has pursued multiple objectives. First of all, the Clinic aims to provide activities based on the “learning by doing” methodology. Since the academic year 2018-2019, an elective course has been introduced in the Law degree program, giving the students the opportunity to engage with a “law in action” perspective. Students are involved in handling real cases and work under the supervision of lecturers, attorneys (who work with the Clinic by means of an agreement between the University and the Milan Bar Association) and specialised tutors. They offer assistance in criminal defense proceedings and provide legal counsel at desks established in partnership with local organization and agencies.

Since the academic year 2023-2024, this elective course has been complemented by a module entitled “Crimmigration Issues”, aimed at training the students of the Legal Clinic who work at the Legal Information Desk for migrants inmates at San Vittore prison in Milan.

Secondly, the Legal Clinic of Criminal Justice aims to extend its impact beyond the university, leveraging its resources and expertise for societal benefit. In this perspective, the Clinic has undertaken several projects in collaboration with local organisations, including the Office of the Guarantor of the Rights of Persons Deprived of Personal Liberty of Milan, Bollate Prison, San Vittore Prison of Milan, the Ethno-psychiatric Unit of Niguarda Hospital; the Milan Criminal Chamber; and the Journalists Association of Lombardy.

Furthermore, the Legal Clinic of Criminal Justice intends to promote research projects on the issues it deals with, starting from empirical data and experiences.

This website therefore serves as a platform for disseminating and sharing ongoing research.
