Maria Crippa

Research Fellow in Criminal law

Maria Crippa is Research fellow at the Department of Law “Cesare Beccaria” of the University of Milan since May 2024 and a Fellow of the Re:Constitution 2024/2025 Program (Forum Transregionale Studien - Democracy Reporting International, Stiftung Mercator).

In 2022 she received her PhD in Legal Studies "Cesare Beccaria" from the University of Milan, with the thesis "International criminal justice before domestic courts. Proposals for the implementation of Italian provisions on crimina iuris gentium” under the supervision of Prof. C. Meloni.  As part of her doctoral program, from October and December 2021 she was a visiting scholar at Humboldt University in Berlin with a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Since 2022 she has been involved in the Project of Excellence “International Criminal Law and Current Instruments of Judicial Cooperation on International Crimes,” organized by the National Center for Prevention and Social Defense-CNPDS/ISPAC Foundation with the support of the Department of Legal Sciences “Cesare Beccaria,” and funded by the Ministry of Justice - Department of Justice Affairs.

With Prof. Florian Jeßberger and Prof. C. Meloni, she is editor of the volume “Domesticating International Criminal Law” (Routledge, 2023) and author of the chapter “How to Implement Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide in the Italian System.” She is editor of the “International Criminal Justice” section of the four-monthly journal I diritti dell’uomo. Cronache e battaglie (Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti dell'uomo, Editoriale Scientifica).

Maria is a qualified lawyer in Italy since November 2019. In 2016 she interned at the International Criminal Court (Appeals Chamber), under the supervision of Judge Piotr Hofmański. From November 2016 to June 2018, she was  training intern at the Milan Court of Appeals.
