THE PRISON EMERGENCY: INSIGHTS FROM ITALY AND BEYOND

Event organized by the Department of Legal Studies “Cesare Beccaria” – University of Milan

Sala Napoleonica, Via Sant’Antonio 12 – University of Milan
9:00 AM – 5:45 PM
Accredited by the Milan Bar Association (6 training credits)

After two years of work within the San Vittore Correctional Facility through the Legal Counselling Desk for Foreign Inmates, the Criminal Justice Legal Clinic is pleased to host a study day dedicated to exploring the many challenges of the prison system.

The event will begin with an in-depth discussion of the experience gained at San Vittore, and will then broaden its scope to consider the Italian penal system as a whole - with particular attention to the issue of overcrowding - and a comparative perspective on several European contexts.

Through an open and interdisciplinary dialogue, the event aims to provide a platform for exchange among academics, legal professionals, representatives of penitentiary institutions, and third-sector organizations. The goal is to critically assess systemic shortcomings, highlight good practices, and explore potential solutions - both from a legislative and supranational standpoint.

A light lunch will be offered by the cooperative ABC La Sapienza in Tavola, operating within the Bollate prison.

Registration required via online form
